Spike Lee is a director and actor that is famous for speaking his mind through his films and characters that he plays. He speaks his mind mostly on one common theme through his movies. That theme is race. In the majority of his movies like the one we watched in class he shows life through the eyes of an African American character. He shows how society treats and portrays people that are like the character and the things that are wrong with that. He does it in a way though that everyone will understand.
Spike’s audience in my opinion is everyone in society. He wants to raise everyones awareness on the subject of race and how it is dealt with in society. At the times of his films race was not as big of a problem in the media’s eye as it is today. I think Spike realized this and saw what was really going on. He wanted people to start taking action and making things right. He uses his films for other races to notice what is going on while also using it to make the African American population realize that they have a voice and opinion of what is right and wrong. In his movies he addresses these things in different ways, In “Do the Right Thing” he showed these problems through comedy and violence. This is unique because most of the time directors will use just one of these ways to get their points across. Spike does this though it allows his movies to connect with a bigger audience than if he is just just use violence or comedy.
